The Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) is being solicited by IRB regarding researching human research on the internet (Frankel, Siang, 1999 ). IRBs are wrestling with the potential surrounding the internet as this emerging area of research. Interested groups are also trying to figure out how to walk a fine line in preventing potential ethical violations without hindering digital innovation. The basic thriving principles identified during an exploratory study regarding this topic were autonomy, beneficence and justice (Frankel, Siang,1999 ). Other important topics discussed were “benefits and risk”, “informed consent”, PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY and justice. The discussions surrounding this framework helped create a foundation for future actions regarding human research on the internet.
This will continue to be an important platform of discussion in the 21st century.
